My thoughts on X-Men: The Last Stand
The last time I actively collected comic books was about 15 years ago. Recently, I’ve noticed that some heroes or groups have multiple titles. Some, even, contradict each other as far as story canon goes. So I have an open mind when it comes to someone changing the story line or characterization of a comic. I am even more open when it comes to the comic book movies. I always expect the unexpected as various studios or executives will decide to change something based on whatever logic that they see fit to use.
When X-Men: The Last Stand started, I noticed the direction of Brett Ratner very different than that of Brian Singer. Ok, no big deal. I also noticed that whatever characterization or charisma that the actors had with each other was what was left over from the previous two films. Ok, I can handle that too. I can also handle character deaths when they serve to further the development of the story. Some of the events, however, did not serve to further the story but were only there to create a dramatic scene. I won’t give away anything here but when a character dies, there needs to be a point made. I felt there were no points made and the death(s) were inconsequential to the overall picture. Wasted.
I like the action scenes. Finally, we get to see mutants at their best: using their gosh-darn powers! Battle scenes right out of a comic book were thrown onto the screen but, alas, they were too few too late. I wanted more interaction between the two mutant factions.
I will buy this movie when it comes out. It will go up on the shelf next to my other comic book movies and I will pull it down and watch it from time to time. Thanks to my handy-dandy skip button, I will just jump to the scenes I want to watch.
I liked the first two X-Men movies a little better than this one, but I look at them as one piece so I’ll enjoy them as they were meant.

Honestly, in the world of comics do many popular character always stay dead?
I have no problem with killing off characters. I apologize if I seem to sound that way in my review. IF you are going to do that though, make sure that it somehow moves the story along. The deaths in this movie were completely independent of the actual progression of the story.
